SOLD. Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, by George McPhee, 2023. Charcoal and Colored Pencil. 16 x 12 inch.
The Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. It has a unique red roof! This lighthouse is one of the few remaining screwpile offshore lighthouses. The image is not the original look of 1875, nor the most current view. The drawing is in mixed media: charcoal and colored pencil (A variety of red colors only for the red areas of the structure, some blended together, and others blended with grey, white, or black.). Charcoal white is also being used. The sky is intentionally left blank as the textured light gray pastel paper.

Sea Turtle, by George McPhee, 2025. Colored Pencil. 8x10 inch. $250 USD.
A joyful underwater seascape featuring a sea turtle with some fish friends! I did some land-based box turtles recently and wanted to do a sea turtle too, which are native to the coastal Virginia area.

Joyful, by George McPhee, 2024. Colored Pencil. 10x8 inch. $275 USD.
Wearing a crown of my favorite flowers, red roses, really takes me over the top. Being joyful is the best feeling.

Picture

SOLD. Great Blue Heron, by George McPhee, 2023. Pastel. 10 x 8 inch.
Great Blue Heron... I make my home in the wetlands of Virginia's Eastern Shore! So peaceful and quiet here, unless I am visiting the tourists and beachgoers in the town of Cape Charles, then there's a bit more traffic! I have lots of feathered friends here.

Picture
Woman Sunbathing on the Beach, by George McPhee, 2023. Colored Pencil. 12 x 9 inch. $275 USD.
After a short stroll on the beach, I found the perfect spot to sunbathe and enjoy the warmth of my vacation in the sun.

Picture

The Serenade, by George McPhee, 2022. Colored Pencil. 10 x 8 inch. $325 USD.
While on vacation at the bed and breakfast, she looks up with her wondering Mona Lisa smile while listening to her first serenade. Composed in a blue and orange complementary color scheme with colorful shadows.

Young Snowy Owl with Icy Pine Branches, by George McPhee, 2022. Colored Pencil. 8 x 6 inch. $350 USD.
Winter in the arctic is pretty darn cold. But I love being surrounded by ice! Some of the tree line limit extends just into the arctic circle, and there I can visit beautiful ice-covered pine trees. Female Snowy Owls, especially young ones like me, have more color in their feathers... We're not all white like the guys. I wish you wise and happy winters!

Picture
Ring-tailed Lemur with Tree, by George McPhee, 2021. Charcoal. 10 x 8 inch. $250 USD.
I am a ring-tailed lemur. See my rings? I’m rather proud of them. You may be surprised to find out why I am visiting you. And why I look surprised too! I often look surprised with my strong black colors around my big bold eyes. I have decided to travel all the way from my island of Madagascar to visit you today. Are you surprised? I really enjoy living in my jungle with my unusual trees, but I just felt like traveling for a while outside of my country to visit with some of these odd creatures we call humans.

Picture
Two Monk Artists, by George McPhee, 2020. Colored Pencil. 11 x 14 inch. $400 USD.
These Buddhist monks went to the temple in Thailand for a special event... besides meditation, they were challenged to do some art on their drawing pads! At least that's what I think. It seemed unlikely to me that monks would be taking notes of a lecture, and the paper looks more like art pads to me. So, they are now known as the "Two monk artists." The scene is a close representation of the reference photo, though I made a few changes for the sake of the composition, and its more vertical orientation. I moved the two monks slightly closer than in the photo to fit them in and to imply that they were close friends. The black monk was more in shadow, so one goal was to make his face have a blurry look, unlike the tall monk's more detailed face.

Picture
Squirrel Monkey Forest, by George McPhee, 2020. Colored Pencil. 9 x 12 inch. $350 USD.
Welcome to the Squirrel Monkey forest, a place I created in my imagination. It is my first wildlife painting (other than some wildlife drawings in my adolescence). The closer monkey is from a photo I took at the zoo. The more distant monkey is painted blurry, in keeping with how our eyes see things in the distance. I created the forest opening on the left as a light source, which creates various highlights and shadows on the leaves and tree limbs. The leaves took forever to do! Because the detailed background is so green, I decided to replace a green mossy look on the foreground tree branch with streaks of purple. I always thought purple looked good with green. Plus it goes well with the purple used in their mouths.

Picture
Ballerina with Tattoo, by George McPhee, 2021. Colored Pencil. 9 x 12 inch.  $350 USD
Whenever I enter the cafe wearing my ballerina dress, I get asked a hundred questions about my tattoo.

Picture
Magical Cat, by George McPhee, 2020. Colored Pencil.
7.5 x 9.5 inch (For an 8 x 10 mat opening).
Not For Sale.
This cat has magical powers! Or at least he thinks so. He will mesmerize you with the shimmering patterns on his fur. This Russian Blue has some tabby-like stripes on his head.

Picture
Somebody's Brother, by George McPhee, 2020. Colored Pencil. 7.5 x 9.5 inch. (For an 8 x 10 mat opening)  $250 USD
I chose this model for my first effort at painting black skin tones. I particularly liked the way light was bouncing around his forehead and other places which provided an opportunity to add bold splotches of colors in an impressionistic manner, even pink and yellow highlights, and from a normal viewing distance the viewer’s eyes will blend some of them together.

Picture
SOLD. Two Shih Tzu, by George McPhee, 2020. Colored Pencil. 12 x 9 inch.
These two handsome Shih Tzu dogs enjoyed having a formal portrait done of them. I heard they even barked for joy.

Picture
Guy with Glasses, by George McPhee, 2020. Mixed Media (Colored Pencil, Graphite). 8 x 11 inch. Not For Sale.
This drawing moves off my realism style, with a focus on completing the face, sunglasses, and hands realistically, but finishing the body in a stylized manner with lines only.
Picture
Solo Deer, by George McPhee, 2024. Colored Pencil. 8x10 inch. $225 USD.
Walking in a woodland area I came upon a grassland clearing and was greeted by this majestic deer looking at me, with his handsome antlers.

Picture

SOLD. Kingfisher, by George McPhee, 2023. Colored Pencil. 8 x 10 inch.
As I fly through the sunlight my back feathers have a range of blue tones including turquoise. My belly is always orange. I am also known as the Common Kingfisher, Eurasian Kingfisher or River Kingfisher, and small as a sparrow. You will find me hanging out on riverbanks looking for fish to eat!

Picture

SOLD. Cold Cowboy of the Great Plains, by George McPhee, 2022. Colored Pencil. 14 x 11 inch.
The end of winter on the Great Plains. My horse is my steady companion on my cold journeys from Alberta to Montana and beyond, and back again. The brown grass is giving way to green. The clouds give me peace. Spring awaits!

Picture
SOLD. Cassatt Cottage, by George McPhee, 2022. Colored Pencil. 10 x 8 inch.
This cottage is one of the original homes built in the late 1800s in the historic section of Cape Charles, Virginia, by Alexander Cassatt, the brother of famous impressionist artist Mary Cassatt. The front view is the shorter side of this home, with well-kept colorful gardens by the owners who commissioned this painting.

Picture
Larger Than Life, by George McPhee, 2022. Pastel. 12 x 9 inch. $300 USD.
Running around my favorite woodland trails, I came across this beaver-chewed fallen oak limb. Its sun-warmed bare wood provided the perfect setting to eat my afternoon snack.

Picture
Biker on Motorcycle, by George McPhee, 2020. Colored Pencil. 11 x 14 inch. $450 USD.
This biker posed for a photo on his motorcycle in front of a bar, and became a realistic cityscape painting! Notice all the details... the bouncing light on the metal, the reflections, the details in the front such as the purple and green toned tire, the multi-colored reflections in the headlight, the sunshine highlights on bottom of his black hair, and the tattoos! The jeans were created with multiple undertones of blue, green, and purples under a thin layer of black. The red paver road and the windows follow the rules of perspective as they fade to the upper left corner in the stylized background.

Picture
Spring at Monticello, by George McPhee, 2020. Colored Pencil. 12 x 9 inch.  $350 USD.
A unique painting of the historic home and plantation of Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd president of the United States. The property is called Monticello, and is just outside Charlottesville, Virginia. The scene is from an unusual angle from a photo taken by the artist, with heavy shadows near the left maple tree, and bright sunlight on the right side. The artist moved the Crimson King Maple tree on the right closer to the mansion, and moved the spring tulips to the curved walkway.

Picture
SOLD. Woman in Triumph at the Arc de Triomphe, by George McPhee, 2021. Charcoal 11 x 14 inch.
I came to Paris to celebrate the many triumphs in my life, overcoming so many obstacles. With all that Paris is known for, there really is no better place for me to visit first than the Arc de triomphe, an historical monument with so many lovely details in the architecture and its many statues and reliefs.

Picture
SOLD. Woman with Fancy Hair, by George McPhee, 2021. Colored Pencil. 9 x 12 inch.
"I really enjoyed my hair styles from the 1970s and 80s. Bigger is better! It helped to show off my natural curls." In this artwork, I continued the style of somewhat unblended bands of color in places, to let the viewer's eye do the blending. Plus I did some research on common backgrounds used in traditional oil paintings from the early 20th century, and chose a green-brown that I mixed. The dress was a white one from a reference photo of a model, which I turned into blue with purple shadows.

Picture
Tundra Swan in Moonlight , by George McPhee, 2021. Colored Pencil. 10 x 8 inch. Not For Sale.
I am the Tundra Swan. Much of my time is spent in the Arctic, but it gets pretty darn cold up there, so I come into certain regions of the United States each year to spend the winter. When I last entered Virginia for winter, I found this lovely and oddly colored marsh, lit by moonlight creating the unusual dark colors, including a blue and purple sheen on the waters. I am native to North America, and my formal name is Cignus Columbianus. We are not to be confused with the conceited Mute Swan in Europe, which invaded the USA after people brought them in to live in popular parks. They have that long s-curved neck. I am smaller overall and have a straighter neck. You like me better, I am sure.

Picture
SOLD. Richard Home Portrait, by George McPhee, 2021. Colored Pencil. 13 x 10 inch.
Large skies and flat lands with many trees and landscaped flower gardens accompany this special brick home portrait.

Picture
Blonde Man, by George McPhee, 2020. Colored Pencil. 7.5 x 9.5 inch (For an 8 x 10 mat opening) Not For Sale.
This model's image is best known for his unusually blue eyes, and a blue suit with many purple highlights and undertones.

Picture
SOLD. Shiloh, by George McPhee, 2021. Colored Pencil.  10 x 8 inch.
For this memorial pet portrait of a dog with a mostly white face, I squint and stretch to see what colors can be used to express white fur. Some areas had very light peach or pink section, and purple was chosen for snout highlights. Overall the theme of complimentary colors was chosen for this piece… bold orange (the brown fur on body) to bounce off the medium blue background.
